Telford United warmed up for Saturday's FA Trophy semi-final with Canvey Island in the worst possible style by slipping to a surprise home defeat against Forest Green Rovers.

Goals in either half from Alex Meechan and Alex Sykes sealed the victory for the visitors.

Bucks boss Mick Jones made a host of changes to his line-up but it was the hosts who started the brighter.

John Grant crashed a thundering shot against the bar in the early stages while Andy Rushbury, Sam Ricketts and Paul Moore all went close to breaking the deadlock in the opening period.

So it was against the run of play when Rovers took the lead on 38 minutes when a long-range shot from Sykes came back off the bar and Meechan was first to react to tap in the rebound from close range.

That gave Forest Green the initiative and they dominated the next 20 minutes, doubling their advantage three minutes after the interval when a 30-yard free-kick from Sykes took a nasty bobble and flew up over the helpless Chris MacKenzie.

Telford continued to press for a lifeline, but clear-cut chances remained at a premium with Ricketts and Richard Lavery both going close with headers.

But it was Rovers who looked the more accomplished and despite Sykes hitting the side-netting from a tight angle, Scott Rogers blasting a one-on-one chance straight at MacKenzie and Meechan crashing a shot off the bar, they held on for a deserved victory.
