But it was not a pretty game to watch with scrappy play from both sides resulting in few chances.

The first opportunity of the game fell the visitors way when Andy Sinton's deep cross was only cleared as far as Darren Stride who fired the ball well over the bar from the edge of the area.

The game struggled to come alight in the first quarter of the game until the 26th minute when Craig Dudley retaliated following Martin Forster's late challenge and was shown his second yellow card and was duly sent off.

Despite having the extra man Rovers still struggled to create any clear chances with Alex Meechan flicking the ball wide form Gary Owers' cross on the half-hour.

Burton's best chance came five minutes later when Sinton's corner was cleared by the Rovers defence only as far as player manager Nigel Clough whose low drilled shot was parried away by Steve Perrin.

After the break Ben Cleverley played Alex Meechan through the Burton defence but visiting keeper Lee Camp raced out of his area to clear the danger.

After that the game went back to being a drab affair with both sides failing to make any impact until 20 minutes from time.

When Steve Tweddle found Martin Foster on the left wing, his cross was headed just wide by Kayode Odejayi.

Rovers finally broke the deadlock in the 86th minute when Kevin Langan's cross found Rob Cook who nodded the ball past the keeper into the right-hand corner of the net.

Deep into injury time Rovers secured the win when Meechan broke down the left-hand side of the penalty area and his low cross found Tweddle at the back post to stab the ball home from close range.
