The game started very tamely with neither side making any impact until the 20th minute when Rovers' Martin Foster latched onto a loose ball and fired his shot well wide from thirty yards out.

Foster had a second attempt nine minutes before the interval which didn't go out of play and Alex Meechan's cross found Kayode Odejayi who headed just wide.

Three minutes later Ben Cleverley's deep cross was chested down by Neil Grayson and Meechan's half volley flashed just over the bar.

The best chance of the half came in first half injury time when Odejayi burst through the Northwich defence and with Meechan in acres of space he decided to go it alone with Northwich keeper Gary Kelly smothering the ball at his feet.

Rovers increased the tempo in the second half and almost took the lead in the 47th minute when Steve Garvey's attempted clearance ricocheted off Matthew Russell and Meechan's shot on the turn went straight at Kelly.

The woodwork came to the visitors rescue straight after when Cleverley's inswinging corner was headed against the bar by Jon Richardson and Russell's follow up went wide.

Just before the hour Rovers deservedly went a goal in front when Odejayi's cross found Meechan who chested the ball down and drove the ball underneath the keeper into the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Northwich's only reply came fifteen minutes from time with Gregg Blundell racing onto a through ball but his shot was well blocked by Steve Perrin.
