Forest Green Rovers have announced that local businessman Dale Vince is to invest a "sizeable sum" in the cash-strapped club. The Blue Square Bet Premier outfit have been in financial trouble for some time having fought off winding up orders from HM Revenue and Customs this year.

"I'm a big football fan and saw that they'd been having some trouble," Vince told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"I found we had a lot in common and that we could do things together."

Vince, who owns local green energy company Ecotricity, was quick to point out it was not a takeover but that we would become the major shareholder.

"I'm just joining the with the people there - the fans, the directors and everyone else that's been making the club what it is today," he said.

"I feel like I'm joining them to make things right and hopefully move on and take them to the next level.

"I think there's a great possibility here - super ground, great club and great fans. They just need a bit of help and that's what I'm here to do."
